There are two amygdalae, one arranged in each mind half of the globe. The amygdala is a limbic framework structure that is engaged with a large number of our feelings and inspirations, especially those that are identified with endurance. It is engaged with the preparing of feelings, for example, dread, outrage, and joy. The amygdala is additionally answerable for figuring out what recollections are put away and where the recollections are put away in the cerebrum. It is imagined that this assurance depends on how tremendous an enthusiastic reaction an occasion summons. Amygdala and Fear The amygdala is engaged with autonomic reactions related with dread and hormonal discharges. Logical investigations of the amygdala have prompted the disclosure of the area of neurons in the amygdala that are answerable for dread molding. Dread molding is an affiliated learning process by which we learn through rehashed encounters to fear something. Our encounters can cause mind circuits to change and structure new recollections. For instance, when we hear a disagreeable sound, the amygdala uplifts our impression of the sound. This elevated observation is regarded troubling and recollections are shaped connecting the sound with repulsiveness. In the event that the commotion alarms us, we have a programmed flight or battle reaction. This reaction includes the actuation of the thoughtful division of the fringe sensory system. Enactment of the nerves of the thoughtful division brings about quickened pulse, expanded students, increment in metabolic rate, and increment in blood stream to the muscles. This movement is composed by the amygdala and permits us to react suitably to threat. Life systems The amygdala is made out of an enormous bunch of around 13 cores. These cores are partitioned into littler edifices. The basolateral complex is the biggest of these regions and is made out of the sidelong core, basolateral core, and adornment basal core. This cores complex has associations with the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hippocampus. Data from the olfactory framework is gotten by two separate gatherings of amygdaloid cores, the cortical cores, and average core. Cores of the amygdala likewise make associations with theâ hypothalamus and brainstem. The nerve center is engaged with enthusiastic reactions and assists with directing the endocrine framework. The brainstem transfers data between the cerebrum and spinal rope. Associations with these zones of the cerebrum permit amygdaloid cores to process data from tangible zones (cortex and thalamus) and zones related with conduct and autonomic capacity (nerve center and brainstem). Capacity The amygdala is associated with a few elements of the body including: ArousalAutonomic reactions related with fearEmotional responsesHormonal secretionsMemory Tactile Information The amygdala gets tactile data from the thalamus and from the cerebral cortex. The thalamus is additionally a limbic framework structure and it associates territories of the cerebral cortex that are engaged with tangible discernment and development with different pieces of the cerebrum and spinal string that likewise have a job in sensation and development. The cerebral cortex forms tactile data acquired from vision, hearing, and different faculties and is associated with dynamic, critical thinking, and arranging. Area Directionally, the amygdala is found profound inside the transient flaps, average to the nerve center and adjoining the hippocampus. Amygdala Disorders Hyperactivity of the amygdala or having one amygdala that is littler than different has been related with dread and tension issue. Dread is a passionate and physical reaction to threat. Uneasiness is a mental reaction to something that is seen as risky. Uneasiness can prompt fits of anxiety that happen when the amygdala imparts signs that an individual is at serious risk, in any event, when there is no genuine danger. Did you discover any of them especially very much took care of? Paper The Sporting Spirit exemplifies senses, pride, appearances, patriotism, imagery, social character, and human inclinations as center issues that instigate the gravity of the article; ââ¬Å"savageâ⬠impulses coagulate with patriotism and appearances to encourage oneââ¬â¢s pride, representing the proudness of being marked by oneââ¬â¢s nation â⬠American, British, Russian, or something else. Pride cultivates covetousness, which disinters the requirement for war â⬠either actually or metaphorically. Orwell passes on emblematic war in his article, The Sporting Spirit, delineating sports as a methods for a fight between observers, between two countries. It is where you either lose or win; there is no other option. ââ¬Å"Sport is honestly copy warfare,â⬠George Orwell says. Orwell addresses numerous human issues as subjects, however centers around contrasts of networks, observers, and countries to clarify his supposition, adding to his realness. In section seven, Orwell separates among urban and natural networks, and how they see sports. Sports give idealism to individuals in urban social orders â⬠huge towns â⬠as an approach to meander from their stationary life. The word usage of ââ¬Å"sedentaryâ⬠makes this atmosphere of inaction, which differentiates the subject of ââ¬Å"savageâ⬠observers â⬠onlookers who are passionate to win through brutal ways. Orwell even portrays the individuals who accept games unite countries as an advanced clique. This critical utilization of ââ¬Å"cultâ⬠â⬠a gathering or an arrangement of strict conviction â⬠depicts the dim amusingness Orwell uses to unpretentiously deride those perspectives. Orwell addresses human issues of definition in the initial two passages. He unveils what numerous ââ¬Å"thinkingâ⬠individuals have saved covert for such a long time â⬠that game varieties hostility. Game hostility is a typical marvel these days; Orwell arranges groups as ââ¬Å"Dynamo,â⬠ââ¬Å"Russian,â⬠or ââ¬Å"British,â⬠making the peruser intentional the names onlookers use so as to relate to their group. The expression of Orwell â⬠ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I am told by someone,â⬠and ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ another person advises meâ⬠â⬠mean how his supposition isn't restricted to only him, but instead that others share it too. Social recog nizable proof is one of the key human issues passed on in the article. Orwell says that sports make new ill will on the two sides. The expression of ââ¬Å"animosityâ⬠depicts the despise of onlookers to each other as intense aversion reared from the excellencies and contrasts of each other. This is one of the human issues Orwell can pass on brilliantly. The announcement that sports make cooperative attitude between the countries is an extraordinary misnomer since it is sport that represents the serious idea of people and their requirement for order. People look for pride, and they love force and control. That is the reason sport is war â⬠it is about the misfortune, just as the addition. (What one gains, the different loses.) Spectators can construe contrasts of races, nations, or political preferences as a gathering, and either boo the arbitrator, or sing hostile tunes that corrupt the other group just as their onlookers to show their decisions. Orwell suggests that seriousness doesn't manufacture character. Best case scenario, it double-crosses it. Best case scenario, it defiles it. It isn't only the players who are tainted; it is likewise the onlookers. The symbolism of a combat zone delineate Orwellââ¬â¢s perspective on sport as a savage, brutal action where r unning, hopping, and kicking a ball are trial of national ethicalness. Great sportsmanship â⬠trustworthiness, lowliness, imperturbableness, regard, and gratefulness â⬠is non-existent to Orwell. Orwellââ¬â¢s tricky poignancy portrays how sports are improperly comprehended by many. Orwell likewise contacts, as I would like to think, on closed-mindedness as opposed to nationalism. In sports, if a group loses, it is on purpose. Overlooking the explanations behind misfortune, and wildly accusing the arbitrator or the conditions is a type of numbness that is just appeared by a bullhead â⬠an individual who accepts that his nation is the sole best region, willfully. Orwell can create the paper with one human issue as a center: sport extols contrasts, it vilifies rivals, and disintegrates the ethical character of its devotees. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-15077882892797421922020-08-21T08:17:00.001-07:002020-08-21T08:17:15.465-07:00Blog Archive Monday Morning Essay Tip Use the Optional Essay to Demonstrate Responsibility Blog Archive Monday Morning Essay Tip Use the Optional Essay to Demonstrate Responsibility Business school candidates who have an obvious weakness in their profileâ"such as a low GPA or GMAT score or a prolonged gap in work experienceâ"often worry that they are destined to attend a virtually unknown business school. Collective Bargaining, Reviewing the Process and the Issues that Commonly Present Themselves Lucila Munoz* I. Introduction Throughout the years organizations and unions have struggled for rights and benefits for workers. All the while the managers, supervisors and directors have counteracted such behaviors, favoring the companies, to protect them from going out of business. Through collective bargaining both parties have labored to find common ground. Collective bargaining as defined by the Cornell Law School is as follows; Collective bargaining consists of negotiations between an employer and a group of employees so as to determine the conditions of employment. The result of collective bargaining procedures is a collective agreement.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The expectations that are said to result should be that both side are to make compromises in order to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. The mutual beneficial agreements are aimed to regulate working conditions. The employees are more than likely to be represented by the union to which the employees belong to. There are many pros and cons to this type of bargaining. As much as most would like for things to run smoothly and quickly, in reality the issues of collective bargaining rarely do. Collective bargaining process is long and arduous because of the length of time involved in preparing the proposals and counter proposals and the long hours spent during negotiations. The collective bargaining process is also intricate because of the changing stratagems and tactics used by both parties in the pre-negotiation and actual negotiation stages. Other issues that influence the difficulty of the process include the structure of both panels of negotiators which may include lawyers and the opposite approaches and goals of the panel members. Collective bargaining is a long, complex, and emotional-rational process, the outcome of which depends on the balance of power between the union and management and their bargaining stances (Ballot, 1992). It is defined by Byars and Rue (1991) as a process that involves the negotiation, drafting, administration, and berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-47368980111002798972020-05-05T17:01:00.001-07:002020-05-05T17:01:26.474-07:00Domestic And Foreign Policies Essay Research Paper free essay sample Domestic And Foreign Policies Essay, Research Paper Domestic and Foreign Policies Throughout our history, many policies have been made to cover with domestic or foreign issues or struggles. One illustration of domestic policies were the reforms FDR created called the New Deal. An illustration of a foreign policy was that of containment used after WW2. In the 1930 # 8217 ; s our state and many others around the universe went through a fiscal depression. The Depression was largely attributed to the stock market clang in 1929. President Hoover who served before FDR tried legion things to seek and assist remedy the depression. But by the clip FDR was elected in, the depression was still really much nowadays. FDR was unfastened to many different thoughts to seek and repair the economic system. The authorities plans he initiated were portion of his domestic policy called the New Deal. President Roosevelt wasted no clip one time he got into office. Within the first One- Hundred yearss of his first term he made more of import alterations than old presidents had made in the whole 1920 # 8217 ; s. The president clearly showed the state that he would seek and repair the jobs with all he could perchance do.Some people called FDR # 8217 ; s, New Deal, Quinones 2 alphabet soup, because the reforms were new authorities bureaus with acronym abbreviations. One belief of President Roosevelt was that the authorities should assist the needy straight. One new authorities bureau implemented in 1933, that demonstrated this belief was the Public Works Administration or the PWA. The PWA put people to work by holding Bridgess, main roads, dikes, and other public undertakings built. One really of import alteration that FDR made was set uping the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The FDIC provided insurance on a bank depositors money through the assistance of federal financess. This manner the federal authorities would reconstruct a lost history for up to 100,000 dollars. FDR was doubtless one of the best leaders our state has seen, but it wasn # 8217 ; T so easy for him. Two of the plans Roosevelt instituted were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The National Recovery Administration enabled codifications that called for, or encouraged concerns to hold upon just monetary values. One concern complained that these codifications were excessively much like Torahs. Therefore, the NRA gave legislative power to the president that he shouldn # 8217 ; Ts have had. The supreme tribunal declared the disposal unconstitutional. A similar instance was brought to the supreme tribunal. It said that the codifications that went along with the Agricultural Adjustment Act that had required a revenue enhancement were besides unconstitutional. In response to the supreme tribunal opinions FDR tried to raise the figure Quinones 3 of Judgess that sit in the supreme tribunal from 9 to 15. He wanted to name justnesss that shared the same positions as his on. The Congress didn # 8217 ; t O.K. of the program. Directly following universe war two the United States and the Soviet Union emerged as the two ace powers of the universe. Although the two states were Alliess during the war, after the war they were common enemies. The U.S. strongly apposed the political progresss the Soviet Union was doing. Directly after World War 2, The Soviet Union was rapidly back uping communist revolutions within the states of Eastern Europe. Finally, they even gained control of most of these states. The U.S. saw the Soviet Union and communism as a menace to free life. Our authorities rapidly developed a policy of containment toward the spread of Communism throughout the universe. By the United States practising the policy of containment, it engaged itself into what is known as the cold war. The cold war didn # 8217 ; t contain existent combat between the two states. It was the practicing of their foreign policies towards each other in order to prevent or addition universe power. Directly following WW2, President Truman instituted the Truman Doctrine. This philosophy said that the United States would back up those states that were in danger of be taken over by Soviet influence. Using the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan the U.S. sent one million millions of dollars in assistance to European states to forestall the Quinones 4 rise of communist parties. The United States besides tried to deter the Soviet Union from distributing communism by fall ining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO. NATO was an confederation between 12 states with the United States as the key participant. The two states began to vie against each other in many assorted ways. In response to NATO, the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact, which was an confederation between the Soviet Union and the Soviet orbiters of Eastern Europe. The Soviet Union beat the U.S. to infinite which motivated the U.S. to turn out the U.S. infinite plan was far more superior to the Soviet. All these Acts of the Apostless of our authorities were apart of our policy of containment towards the Soviet Union and their influence by non wining any power to them. In the 1950 # 8217 ; s and 1960 # 8217 ; s the United States raised their attempts in their containment policy. They didn # 8217 ; t want to see Soviet and communist influence move across Asia. In the 50 # 8217 ; s the U.S. began a war with the Soviet supported North Korea in an attempt to incorporate communist influence over South Korea. The U.S. and other states that were members of the United Nations sent military personnels down to South Korea to seek and incorporate the North Koreans. The South Korean forces were largely made up of U.S. and South Korean military personnels. The U.S. was successful in their containment of Soviet influence but lost over Quinones 5 50,000 American lives. In the early 60 # 8217 ; s the United States and the Soviet Union about went to war when the United States learned that the Soviet Union was hive awaying atomic missiles on the island of Cuba. Because Cuba was so close to the U.S. it was a direct menace on U.S. security. During this event called the Cuban Missile Crisis President Kennedy sent the U.S. Navy to barricade Soviet ships with atomic arms that were coming into Cuba. The U.S. and Soviet Union were on the threshold of war but they resolved the crisis. One of the most influential actions taken in our state # 8217 ; s history in the support of containment was our states determination to step in in Vietnam. Our engagement was about an exact repetition our engagement in Korea. Under President Eisenhower we sent military forces to South Vietnam to develop them in order to support themselves from communist North Vietnam. Under The following president, President Kennedy, we were directing even more assistance to Vietnam to seek and forestall what the U.S. saw as a possible communist return over of Southeast Asia. When President Johnson took over after Kennedy was assassinated our engagement in Vietnam increased. Johnson saw that the South Vietnam authorities wasn # 8217 ; t able to get the better of the Communist on their ain. But the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution is what enabled Johnson to direct military assistance. From Johnson # 8217 ; s Quinones 6 presidential term through to President Nixon we saw engagement in Vietnam that finally ended in United States failure. We left the state of affairs unfinished with the South Vietnamese to complete without U.S. assistance. With Nixon came the beginning to the terminal of the cold war and foreign policy of containment. Nixon began to pattern a foreign policy called vitamin D? tente which was an effort to cut down tenseness between the United States and Soviet Union. These policies whether domestic or foreign are greatly influenced by our states presidents. There effectiveness reflects on the presidents ability to take, and the character and attitude of the general populace. These policies frequently have a great impact on our society. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-18231041310824526662020-04-08T20:03:00.001-07:002020-04-08T20:03:02.561-07:00Advertising research report Twisters Restaurant and Coca Importance of a Market research to Twisters Restaurant Restaurant industry is very competitive. It is highly competitive because every restaurant tries its best to establish a competitive edge over its rival brands. Those restaurants that have succeeded in branding themselves appropriately had done so by employing diversified strategies to win bigger market shares. McDonald, Starbuck and King Burger are some of the most popular restaurants in the World.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Advertising research report: Twisters Restaurant and Coca-Cola specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These restaurants have used strategies such as differentiation, strategic pricing as well as proper branding through appropriate advertising to promote the awareness of their brands. Advertising is considered as one of the main strategy that is very instrumental in promoting companyââ¬â¢s products/services (Katz, 2010). In order for a ny advertisement to be highly effective, there is a need to conduct a market research before selecting the kind of advertisement to adopt. Advertising research helps to identify the advertisements that are extremely efficient in motivating clients to purchase products or services. An advertisement research is very important as it indicates the most appropriate medium to use when advertising (Lake, 2012). There are different medium that can be used to effectively brand products or a services. The choice of the medium to use mostly depends on the behavior of the targeted people. Advertisements are nowadays published mainly on magazines or a newspaper, they are also broadcasted on Television, radio or published on the internet. Thus, in order to establish the most suitable advertisement for a particular company, product or service, it is advisable for such undertaking to be preceded by an advertisement research in order for effectiveness (Honomichl, 1986). Twisterââ¬â¢s Pizza which is a newly founded restaurant has initially undertaken a very important step of promoting itself as well as its products and services through advertisement. The restaurant had greatly benefited from the advertisement that its agency had initially launched. The restaurant had benefited from increased sales that helped the restaurant to realize high revenues. The later discontinuation of the advertisement resulted in performance of the restaurant. Therefore, the loaming decision for Twisterââ¬â¢s advertising agency to use the same advertisement it was initially using to brand the restaurant is subject to debate. The management can opt to give its advertisement agency the go ahead to launch the same advertisement they had used there before as a result of its past record of success in motivating customers to use the restaurantââ¬â¢s facilities as well as to buy its products.Advertising Looking for report on advertising? Nevertheless, it is imperative to note that the new advertisement was meant to advertise a new restaurant that was not in existence there before. In addition, it is also important to factor in the ever changing customers likes and preferences. Although the former Twisterââ¬â¢s advertising was very effective in bringing in new customers to the restaurant, it is apparent that those customers that visited the restaurant disappeared with the discontinuation of the advertisement. This was not in order since these customers were supposed to continue visiting the restaurant, despite the discontinuation of the advertisement as they were conversant with the quality of the services as well as the products offered by Twister Restaurant. Similarly, these custo mers were supposed to be more customers into Twister Restaurant through referrals if they were happy with its dishes and services. Therefore, that is why it is necessary for an advertisement research to be conducted to determine the nature of the advertisement the Twisters advertising agency should design and use to advertise Twisters Restaurant. There are two kinds of research that are conducted by companies in order to establish the most appropriate advertisement to undertake. Syndicate is one of the researches that is conducted by a company and is made available to other companies. Customized research is the other type of research that is conducted and is usually founded on certain criteria and is mostly conducted for a particular company and its results are private. Therefore, Twisters Restaurant requires conducting a customized research that will be tailored for the company and its results only available to appropriate stakeholders. The managements should recommend for a pre-te sting type of customized research that indicates in depth efficiency of an advertisement before it is officially launched. It is noted that the more the pre-testing is done the more it becomes easier to predict its results. The pre-testing research that will be conducted will help Twisters management as well as Twisters advertising agency note the level of attentiveness that customers show, brand linkage, motivation as well as entertainment ad communication that are most suited for the advertisement. This will be realized after the breaking down of the flow of emotions and attention and studying them separately in order to integrate them accordingly in the advertisement being developed. This will help to identify the weak points in the advertisements being developed and replace them. The tests are advisable to be applied during the storyboard phase of the ad that is being development. Introducing the tests at this early stage increases the predictive of the ad being developed.Advert ising We will write a custom report sample on Advertising research report: Twisters Restaurant and Coca-Cola specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More At this juncture, the images generated will be selected and used as incorporated campaign print ad for greater reliability of the final advertisement produced. Moreover, the post-testing research should follow the pre-testing study. These studies can either be syndicated or customized. After conducting the pots-testing research over a long time span, it will show how the developed advertisement will promote the Twisters Restaurant products and services prior to its actual administering. This research will be very important to Twisters Restaurant as it will help to understand its brand linkage, awareness, preference, performance as well as product attitudes and usage. This research will either be conducted by telephone or internet and it indicate whether the finished advertisement will be ab le to achieve its intended objective (Young, 2005). Thus, it is imperative that the management of Twisters advertisement should request first for an advertising research to be conducted. Although this will cost the Restaurant extra costs, it will help to increase the reliability of the advertisement being used by making sure that the final advertisement developed will be very effective in motivating customers to visit Twisters Restaurant. This is because the advertisement research conducted helps the advertising agencies monitor the advertisement development in order to facilitate the effectiveness of the final advertisement. The high cotemporary changes in tastes and preferences of customers are difficult to track, but it is imperative for every single advertisement being developed to be preceded by an advertisement research in order to enhance the quality of the advertisement. It is from this line that Twisters Restaurant does not have other better option, but to recommend for an advertisement research to precede the development of the advertisement in question. Through this way, the advertisement that will be used by the Restaurant will be very effective. Importance of Coca-Cola advertisement in its branding process Coca-Cola is known as the most famous and biggest selling soft drink in the world. Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Coca-Cola has been in the market for more than a century (Arandilla, 2012). Its advertisements have been very effective and thus affected the pop culture as well as the World at range. The first Coca-Cola advertisement published in a newspaper did not show a lot of creativity as well as art work. The second newspaper advertisement that was published was an improvement of the first one and it was longer and more persuasive ad than the first one. The ad promoted Coca-Cola as a refreshing, exhilarating, delicious as well as invigorating drink. During this era, there were no acts that regulated advertisements that were being used. Thus, the ad was tailored in such a manner to exaggerate about Coca-Cola. The developed claimed Coca-Cola as an intellectual beverage, temperance drink that was considered to cure headache as well as neuralgia (Krugman, 1977). The Coca-Cola ad continued to improve with time. Because of the government regulations, Coca-Cola marketing department stopped using in formation such as Coca-Cola can cure headache that was deceptive. Instead, the advertising agency came up with strategic slogans such as ââ¬ËI can buy the world a cokeââ¬â¢ which were very instrumental in selling Coca-Cola within America as well as in the other parts of the World. In 2006, Coca-Cola came up with a very instrumental campaign ad whose theme was on encouraging people to consume Coca-Cola. The campaign provoked people to take Coca-Cola in order to feel happy and to be positive. The ad encouraged people to love everyone and view the world in full color. This message touched many people and many people embraced Coca-Cola brand as it promoted a very essential value of love to the society (Thorson Moore, 1986). The research about the proliferation of Coca-Cola Worldwide was very informative. The study has shed light on how effective appropriate use of advertisement can be in the branding process. Coca-Cola used very captivating ad that greatly moved many people. The Coca Cola advertising agency is very effective in conducting its advertising research. The research helps the agency to establish the level of attentiveness that customers show, brand linkage, motivation as well as entertainment and communication that are most suited for the advertisement. Through this method, the agency is in a position to develop ads that are very effective in persuading more people to consume Coca-Cola. This information that was gathered from this research is very reliable. The reason why the information gathered can be considered as true and valid is because of the linkage of the high extent of Coca-Cola advertisement and how it has promoted the awareness and sale of its products worldwide. Coca-Cola Company has used appropriate slogans to encourage people to consume Coca-Cola. Some of the messages that Coca-Cola advertising company has used in branding itself teaches very essential values to the society. For example, the messages about taking Coca-Cola in order to be happy, positive and to love everybody were very effective in promoting Coca-Cola. Therefore, the information gathered is very relevant to the planning advertisement as it will inform them about the importance of effective advertisement in the branding process. Both Twisterââ¬â¢s marketing management and twisters advertising management will stop taking the advertisement process for granted and instead advocate for an advertisement research to be conducted initially in order to establish the most appropriate advertisement to adopt. Similarly, the Twisters management will learn that advertisement is very imperative in the branding process after learning how it has helped Coca-Cola in becoming the longest surviving as well as the most successful company worldwide. Therefore, in future Twisterââ¬â¢s management will stop considering the money it uses for advertisement as a waste, but instead, it will take it as an appropriate investment. Through this process, the restaurant w ill never discontinue the advertisement process any longer, but instead it will always enhance the advertisement process. Through this way, the restaurant will augment its sales greatly and extend its operations to other regions to become among the most successful restaurants in the world. Reference List Arandilla, R. To introduce you to what you'll have to do, we've gathered up these 15 tips to master the SAT essay. If you can reliably follow all these points, you'll be able to get at least a 6/6/6 on the SAT essay- guaranteed. The Challenge The SAT Essay is a very short assignment. You only get 50 minutes to read a 650-750 word passage, analyze the devices the author uses to structure her/his argument, and write a full-fledged essay- and it can pass in a flash if you don't have a method for attacking it. Writing an SAT essay requires a very specific approach that's unlike the essays you've been writing for English class in school. The goal of this strategy is to cram in as many as possible of the desired components in the 50 minutes you've got. In this article, we give you 15 key tips for the SAT essay. The first five tips in this article relate to what the College Board tells us about what's a good essay. The next five are truths that the College Board doesn't want you to know (or doesnââ¬â¢t make explicit). And the last five tips for SAT essay writing show you how to build an SAT essay, step by step. What the College Board Does Tell You: 5 Tips The College Board explains the main components of the successful SAT Essay in its scoring criteria. Here they are, condensed: #1: Give a Clear Thesis The SAT essay rubric states: "The response includes a precise central claim.â⬠What this means is that your essay needs to make a clear argument that the reader can easily identify. All you have to do to create your "precise central claim" is to identify the main idea of the passage andlistthe methods the author uses to support it. Fortunately, the SAT provides you with the passageââ¬â¢s main idea, so you donââ¬â¢t have to go hunting for it yourself. I've bolded the claim in this (fake) sample prompt so you can see this for yourself: Write an essay in which you explain how Sam Lindsay builds an argument to persuade her audience that more works of art should feature monsters. In your essay, analyze how Lindsay uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of her argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage. Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Lindsayââ¬â¢s claims, but rather explain how Lindsay builds an argument to persuade her audience. Now, here's an example of a thesis statement for an essay responding to this prompt: In the article ââ¬Å"Monsters Monsters Everywhere,â⬠Sam Lindsay uses personal anecdotes, vivid language, and appeals to emotion to persuade her audience that more works of art should feature monsters. It's fine to copy the exact words describing the authorââ¬â¢s central claim from the prompt into your thesis statement- in fact, this guarantees that the graders will see that your thesis is there and on-topic. #2: Include Both an Introduction and a Conclusion The SAT essay rubric states: "The response includes a skillful introduction and conclusion.â⬠Including an introduction paragraph in your essay is absolutely essential to getting a Writing score above a 4 (out of 8). The introduction paragraph introduces the reader to what youââ¬â¢ll be talking about and allows you to set up the structure for the rest of the essay. Plus, an introduction can be a pretty good indicator of the quality for the rest of the essay- a poorly constructed introduction is often a warning that the essay that follows will be equally discombobulated. It's best to have both an introduction and a conclusion, but if youââ¬â¢re running short on time and can only have one, definitely pick the introduction. The main reason for this is that a good introduction includes your thesis statement. For the SAT essay, your thesis (or your "precise central claim") should be a statement about what devices the author uses to build her/his argument. Introductions can be tricky to write, because whatever you write in that paragraph can then make you feel like youââ¬â¢re locked into writing just about that. If youââ¬â¢re struggling with the introduction paragraph, leave yourself 10 blank lines at the beginning of the essay and jump into writing your body paragraphs. Just make sure you remember to go back and write in your introduction before timeââ¬â¢s up! #3: Use Effective Language and Word Choice There are a couple of parts of the Writing score section on the SAT essay rubric that pertain directly to style. The SAT essay rubric states this about a perfect-Writing-score essay: "The response is cohesive and demonstrates a highly effective use and command of language." For most of us, "command of language" is an area that takes a long time to develop, so unless your language skills are really rough or you're prepping at least a year ahead of time (or both), you'll probably get more out of focusing on the other components of the essay. The SAT essay rubric also states: ââ¬Å"The response has a wide variety in sentence structures. The response demonstrates a consistent use of precise word choice. The response maintains a formal style and objective tone.â⬠This basically boils down to: don't be repetitive and don't make grammar mistakes. In addition, you should avoid using first person statements like "I" or "My" in the essay, along with any other informality. You're writing the equivalent of a school paper, not an opinion piece. Bad (Too informal): ââ¬Å"I think that Samââ¬â¢s super persuasive in this article causesheââ¬â¢s just so passionate. It made me feel kinda bad that I donââ¬â¢t really monster it up in my everyday life.â⬠Good (Formal): ââ¬Å"Lindsayââ¬â¢s passionate defense of how drawing monsters 'allows us to laugh at our personal foibles' causes her audience to put themselves in her shoes and empathize with her position.â⬠Finally, try to use different words to describe the same idea- don't use "shows" 15 times. Take the chance to show off your vocabulary (if, and only if, the vocabulary is appropriate and makes sense). This component is the biggest reason why revising your SAT Essay is essential- it's fast and easy to change repeated words to other ones after you're finished, but it can slow you down during writing to worry about your word choice. If you're aiming for a top score, using advanced vocabulary appropriately is vital. #4: Only Use Information From the Passage All the relevant information is in the passage, so avoid getting drawn into the topic and using your outside knowledge- you want to be sure to show that youââ¬â¢ve read the passage. In real life, there are many ways to support a thesis, depending on the topic. But on the SAT, there's one kind of correct support: specific details drawn from the passage youââ¬â¢re asked to analyze. We'll show you more below. #5: Focus Your Essay on Relevant Details You donââ¬â¢t have to mention every single detail that makes the argument effective. In fact, your essay will be more coherent and more likely to score higher in Analysis if you focus your discussion on just a few points. It's more important to show that you're able to pick out the most important parts of the argument and explain their function that it is to be able to identify every single persuasive device the author used. Think about it as if you were asked to write a 50-minute essay describing the human face and what each part does. A clear essay would just focus on major features- eyes, nose, and mouth. A less effective essay might also try to discuss cheekbones, eyebrows, eyelashes, skin pores, chin clefts, and dimples as well. While all of these things are part of the face, it would be hard to get into detail about each of the parts in just 50 minutes. "The New Dance Craze." à ©2015-2016 by Samantha Lindsay. Used with permission. And this is the eye, and this is the other eye, and this is the...other eye...and the other eye...and the other...wait...what's going on here? What the College Board Doesnââ¬â¢t Tell You: 5 Secrets Even though the SAT essay has clearly stated, publicly-available guidelines, there are a few secrets to writing the essay that most students don't know and that can give you a major advantage on the test. #1: Read the Prompt Before the Passage Why? Because the prompt includes the description of the authorââ¬â¢s claim. Knowing what the authorââ¬â¢s claim is going into the article can help keep you focused on the argument, rather than getting caught up in reading the passage (especially if the topic is one you're interested in). #2: Your Facts Must Be Accurateâ⬠¦But Your Interpretation Doesnââ¬â¢t Have to Be A big part of the Analysis score for the SAT essay is not just identifying the devices the author uses to build her argument, but explaining the effect that the use of these devices has on the reader. You donââ¬â¢t have to be completely, 100% accurate about the effect the passage has on the reader, because there is no one right answer. As long as you are convincing in your explanation and cite specific examples, youââ¬â¢ll be good. Here's an example of an interpretation about what effect a persuasive device has on the reader (backed by evidence from the passage): Lindsay appeals to the emotions of her readers by describing the forlorn, many-eyed creatures that stare reproachfully at her from old school notebook margins. The sympathy the readers feel for these forgotten doodles is expertly transferred to Lindsay herself when she draws the connection between the drawn monsters and her own life: ââ¬Å"Often, I feel like one of these monsters- hidden away in my studio, brushes yearning to create what no one else cares to see.â⬠Now, you don't necessarily know for sure if "sympathy for the doodles" is what the author was going for in her passage. The SAT essay graders probably don't know either (unless one of them wrote the passage). But as long as you can make a solid case for your interpretation, using facts and quotes from the passage to back it up, you'll be good. #3: You Should Write More Than One Page This has always been true for the SAT essay, but for the first time ever, the College Board actually came out in The Official SAT Study Guide and explicitly said that length really does matter. Here's the description of a one-paragraph, 120-word-long student response that received a Writing score of 2/8 (bolding mine). ââ¬Å"Due to the brief nature of the response, there is not enough evidence of writing ability to merit a score higher than 1. Overall, this response demonstrates inadequate writing.â⬠(source: The Official SAT Study Guide, p. 176) Youââ¬â¢ll have one page for (ungraded) scrap paper that you can use to plan out your essay, and four pages of writing paper for the essay- plan on writing at least two pages for your essay. #4: Be Objective When Reading the Passage Being able to stay detached while reading the passage you'll be writing the essay about can be tricky. This task might be especially difficult for students who were used to the old SAT essay (which pretty much made it mandatory for you to choose one side or the other). Youââ¬â¢ll have to practice reading persuasive essays and gaining objectivity (so that you are able to write about how the argument is constructed, not whether itââ¬â¢s good or bad). A good way to practice this is to read news articles on topics you care deeply about by people who hold the opposite view that you do. For instance, as a composer and violist/violinist, I might read articles about how children should not be encouraged to play musical instruments, since it holds no practical value later on in life (a view I disagree with vehemently). I would then work on my objectivity by jotting down the central ideas, most important details, and how these details relate to the central ideas of the article. Being able to understand the central ideas in the passage and details without being sidetracked by rage (or other emotions) is key to writing an effective SAT essay. "Always Wear a Helmet." à ©2015-2016 by Samantha Lindsay. Used with permission. Don't let the monster of rage distract you from your purpose. #5: Memorize and Identify Specific Persuasive Techniques Once youââ¬â¢re able to read articles objectively (as discussed in point #4 above), the next step is to be able to break down the essay passage's argument. To do this successfully, you'll need to be aware of some of the techniques that are frequently used to build arguments. The SAT essay prompt does mention a few of these techniques (bolding mine): As you read the passage below, consider how Lindsay uses evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims. reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence. stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed. Itââ¬â¢s certainly possible to wing it and go into the test without knowing specific names of particular persuasive devices and just organically build up your essay from features you notice in the article. However, it's way easier to go into the essay knowing certain techniques that you can then scan the passage for. For instance, after noting the central ideas and important details in the article about how more works of art should feature monsters, I would then work on analyzing the way the author built her argument. Does she use statistics in the article? Personal anecdotes? Appeal to emotion? I discuss the top persuasive devices you should know in more detail in the article "6 SAT Essay Examples to Answer Every Prompt". How to Get All the Necessary Components in 50 Minutes: 5 Step-By-Step Strategies When you write an SAT essay, you only have 50 minutes to read, analyze, and write an essay, which means that you need a game plan going in. Here's a short step-by-step guide on how to write an effective SAT essay. #1: Answer the Prompt Donââ¬â¢t just summarize the passage in your essay, or identify persuasive devices used by the author- instead, be sure to actually analyze the way the author of the passage builds her argument. AsThe Official SAT Study Guide states, "[Y]our discussion should focus on what the author does, why he or she does it, and what effect this is likely to have on readers." College Board makes a point of specifying this very point in its grading rubric as well- an essay that scores a 2 (out of 4) or below in Analysis "merely asserts, rather than explains [the persuasive devices'] importance." If you want to get at least a 3/4 (or a 6/8) in Analysis, you need to heed this warning and stay on task. #2: Support Your Points With Concrete Evidence From the Passage The best way to get a high Reading score for your essay is to quote from the passage appropriately to support your points. This shows not only that youââ¬â¢ve read the passage (without your having to summarize the passage at all), but also that you understand what the author is saying and the way the author constructed her argument. As an alternative to using direct quotations from the passage, itââ¬â¢s also okay to paraphrase some of what you discuss. If you are explaining the author's argument in your own words, however, you need to be extra careful to make sure that the facts you're stating are accurate- in contrast to scoring on the old SAT essay, scoring on the new SAT essay takes into account factual inaccuracies and penalizes you for them. #3: Keep Your Essay Organized The SAT essay rubric states: ââ¬Å"The response demonstrates a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas both within paragraphs and throughout the essay.â⬠The main point to take away from this is that you should follow the standard structure for an SAT essay (introduction-body-body-conclusion). Using a basic four- to five-paragraph essay structure will both keep you organized and make it easier for the essay graders to follow your reasoning- a win-win situation! Furthermore, you should connect each paragraph to each other through effective transitions. We'll give you ways to improve your performance in this area in the articles linked at the end of this article. #4: Make Time to Read, Analyze, Plan, Write, and Revise Make sure you allocate appropriate amounts of time for each of the steps youââ¬â¢ll need to take to write the essay- 50 minutes may seem like a long time, but it goes by awfully quick with all the things you need to do. Reading the passage, analyzing the argument, planning your essay, writing your essay, and revising are all important components for writing an 8/8/8 essay. For a breakdown of how much time to spend on each of these steps, be sure to check out our article on how to write an SAT essay, step-by-step. "Watch Yourself." à ©2015-2016 by Samantha Lindsay. Used with permission. #5: Practice The more you practice analysis and writing, the better youââ¬â¢ll get at the task of writing an SAT essay (as you work up to it a little at a time). It's especially important to practice the analysis and writing components of the essay if you are a slow reader (since reading speed can be difficult to change). Being able to analyze and write quickly can help balance out the extra time you take to read and comprehend the material. Plus, the time you put into working on analysis and writing will yield greater rewards than time spent trying to increase your reading speed. But don't forget: while itââ¬â¢s okay to break up the practice at first, you also really do need to get practice buckling down and doing the whole task in one sitting. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? The outcome of such outlook is individual moral codes or values do not change often, while ethics can change depending on what the particular participation of individuals are. Accordingly, what ethics refers to is right way and wrong way of doing things or acceptable and unacceptable behavior in a given setup such as a workplace. Sources such as Josephine had what he called the Six Pillars individuals can use to improve their ethical approach when they make decisions. These Pillars are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Keeping them in mind while making decisions will enable individuals to harbor an ethical approach all the time. Individuals could also learn ethical norms starting from their own homes and then can capitalize on what they encounter in schools, churches, and eventually in the various social settings they could participate in. This means that individuals will start to make themselves familiar with what is right and wrong starting from their childhood. ... The reason for that could be the action might have overridden the legal rules that are put in place to govern individual behavior. However, ethics and moral are much broader than laws introduced by a given body such as a government and ethics and moral values are different from laws. The reason for that is a given action might be considered to be adhering to what the law requires, but when looking at the end result it is possible to find out it was unethical and vice versa where some actions might be illegal, but ethical. This kind of approach might be applicable in organizations where it is possible to engage in unethical behavior in order to benefit oneself or through a process of carrying out oneââ¬â¢s duty when, for example, a medical practitioner carries out abortion some consider to be unethical or when a criminal lawyer has to defend a criminal that he or she knows could have committed a given crime, simply because their professional ethics require them to do so. There is a lso an outright criminal activity that could take place at workplace where at a higher level some company or government officials would decide to benefit themselves wrongfully by breaking company ethics codes or government regulations and policies. At a lower level employees could engage in larceny that will force them to break the law, as well as break the ethical code of the company they work for that forbids such activity, while at the same time they disregard their own moral values. In other words, they will continue to be useful in helping us understand not just financial markets but also human behaviour and psychology. An example of the many issues facing researchers is the shape of the security market line which, according to the capital asset pricing model, reflects the most efficient portfolio that would give the best return for a certain level of risk. As recounted by Campbell (2000, 1528-29), changes in the slope of this line led to several hypotheses that were attempts to discover the patterns of behaviour of such data. Amongst the conclusions that continue to influence equity markets is that of the significant contribution that small firms make to market returns. The digitalisation of data and the increasing power of number-crunching computer technology in the last twenty-five years certainly helped not only in gathering data and improving its integrity, but also in the develop ment of mathematical models that somehow helped explain the data. Second, many models have been developed in response to the data. ... Coming in the form of equations (packed with Greek letters), these models help us to understand the reality that is captured by actual data. Several of the studies enumerated by Campbell (2000) helped in the development and our understanding of financial markets in the last twenty-five years. We are warned, however, on a point of caution implicit in the use of market data, especially as more academics attempt to find any observable patterns that are market anomalies (over-reaction and contrarian profit-making, month- or day-of-the-week effects, etc.). One key issue is the rationality (or lack thereof) of market investors and its connection to the integrity of the data. The continuing debate over the efficiency of capital markets between believers (Fama & French, 1998) and behaviourists (Shiller, 2000) call into question whether rational investor behaviour give rise to random data that irrational investors (as most investors are characterised by behaviourists) turn into predictable (a nd therefore, non-random) data through an act of rationality. Third, the analysis and discussion of data and models have improved our understanding of the sources of risk, the economic forces that determine the rewards for bearing risk, and the factors that determine the over-all level of asset prices. The different asset pricing models have taught the investing public, businessmen, and public policy-makers several important and overwhelming lessons, such as: first, there is no such thing as a free lunch, and second, that the fluttering of a butterfly's wings in Argentina can bring down the management and the stock price of a company. What the first lesson teaches us is that the berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-36426698308115070842020-01-28T11:23:00.001-08:002020-01-28T11:23:04.020-08:00The Law Enforcement In England And Wales Criminology EssayThe Law Enforcement In England And Wales Criminology Essay Police officers are perceived as the gatekeepers of the criminal justice system (Mendias Kehoe, 2006:70). They are in charge in ensuring safety and security of the public, preventing crimes, and apprehending offenders. Law enforcement in the England and Wales traces its roots back to the kin policing established in the 1800s to provide protection in the communities. This form of policing flourished until increasing threats brought by terrorism compelled the government to implement changes in the police force in the 1960s. The decades following this transformation gave way to various concepts aimed at enhancing the quality of police service. Today, England and Wales follow a law enforcement style of policing in each of their decentralized forces. This paper aims to provide a critical appraisal of the policing style in the England and Wales. The next section of the paper presents the evolution of the police force. This is followed by a discussion of the different features of the England law enforcement. Critical appraisal is presented in the discussion section. Lastly, a conclusion is presented. Law enforcement in England and Wales According to Alpert and Dunham (2009), policing in England started as a private force for the elite members of society. Those who cannot afford to hire their own guards rely on a shared and informal form of policing called the kin policing. People are expected to ensure their own safety, serve as guardians of their own community, and bring forth criminal acts to the court of law. According to Beckley (2007: 938), this form of policing was employed until the 1960s when terrorism threats prompted the development of more appropriate policing strategies. The Police Act of 1964 provided for the establishment of more scientific and organized law enforcement to meet the changing needs of the public. Police professionalism standards such as the Metropolitan Police Principles and the Association of Chief Police Officers Statement of Common Purpose and Values of 1985 were established. Various innovative changes in the police force followed these developments and continued to this day. Despite these changes, policing in England and Wales still exhibit some characteristics of its older form as evidenced by the lack of centralized police system. Today, law enforcement in England and Wales consist of 43 individual county police forces. Having this system implies diversity in policing strategies between the different counties (Hawdon, 2008: 191). Moore (1992: 107) on the other hand observed that despite all this, professional law enforcement remained the main basis of any policing strategy. Features of law enforcement in UK and Wales Das and Verma (2003: 190) contend that police organizations are shaped by culture, political priorities, and immediate needs of the situations surrounding them. Law enforcement in England and Wales has distinct features that separate it from other police forces in the world. Professionalism Das Verma (2003: 204) noted that law enforcers in Europe are noted for their professionalism. They are among the best in terms of training and education. Despite this advantage, Moore (1992: 110) argued that professionalism in police force is an ambivalent concept. He believes that police professionalism should not only focus on criminal laws but also those laws that protect citizens from arbitrary action by government agencies- including the police. Thus, the police officers emphasis on the crime control rather than the law contradicts the essence of their professional duty. Multi-functioning McGarrell, Freilich, and Chermak (2007: 143-4) contend that law enforcement has changed more than any other agency in the public bureaucracy since the 1960s. The authors added that the developments in Englands police force were not only brought by threats of terrorism but also by the social and political changes in the past two decades. Police force had to adjust to meet the changing needs of the public. Police officers are not only expected to enforce laws but also to ensure public safety and security, investigate crimes, do job-related community service, control traffic, and respond to publics call for assistance (Das Verma, 2003: 224). The multitude of tasks expected from the police makes it hard to measure police performance and thus result to ambivalent perceptions about the force. Alpert and Dunham (2009) assert that people have conflicting views of the police. They are brave crime fighters and heroes on one hand and corrupt, heartless, and brutal on the other. Public perceptions about the police are often based on selective positive and negative experiences and not on their collective performance. Beckley (2007: 939) also noted the lack of centralized police organization like the National Guard or Compagnie Reà ´publicaine de Seà ´curiteà ´ in the United States and France in the UK. This function is decentralised to the various police forces. UK police officers are in charge of community policing tasks as well as specialist police duties. They have to perform tasks from traffic supervision and community patrol to criminal investigation. Technologically advanced According to Swanson, Territo and Taylor (1993), police officers not only need human and conceptual skills but also technical skills. They have to be able to use computers; analyse evidence; apply management principles; and perform planning, accounting and budgeting functions. The use of radios, mobile phones and vehicles in patrolling enables police to respond to calls for help quickly. Computers made reporting and record keeping more effective and efficient. The advancements in forensic science brought investigations to a different level. However, critics say that the use of patrol cars instead of foot patrolling limits interaction between the community and police, thus contributing to the degradation of police and community relations. Power Weisburd and Braga (2006:13) stressed the polices capability to perform their tasks without public intrusion. Despite the fact that they are established by the government and accountable to the public, they remain independent (Moore, 1992:109). Alpert and Dunham (2009) contended that police officers are provided with enormous discretionary power which may not be beneficial to the public. Das and Verma (2003:224) argued that the fact that the UN General Assembly formulated the Code of Conduct for Police Officials in 1979 attests to the authority of the police and the need to prevent abuse and misuse of this power. Reactive policing Moore (1992: 112) also recognised the reactive characteristic of policing. Police officers tend to rely on patrols and calls from the public to solve crimes. The advantage of this strategy is that it prevents the police from interfering in private lives of the people without their consent. This ensures that the participation of the police in the situation is necessary, official and acceptable to the community. However, this strategy is problematic because it implies that a crime has to be committed before action can be taken. While this is an effective law enforcement strategy, it is not a good crime control method. Moore also observed that it cannot be utilised in crimes where there are no victims or witnesses or where victims refuse to come forward. Discussion and appraisal of the law enforcement policing Based on the discussion provided above, it is apparent that the law enforcement style of policing in England and Wales has advantages and disadvantages. Although police officers in the England are known for their professionalism, their tendency to focus on crime prevention rather than law enforcement reflects misguided understanding of their professional duty. As a result, police legitimacy and effectiveness remains problematic. According to Moore (1992: 111), there is no indication that policing has delivered in their diverse functions. He noted that: there are no positive correlations between patrolling and crime prevention; police crime investigations are not always fruitful; response systems do not guarantee arrests; and criminal punishments do not always result to rehabilitation. This shows that implementation of policies like the UN General Assemblys Code of Conduct for Police Officials and the UNDP Police Act (UNDP Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, 2003) are necessary to ensure police accountability; improve efficiency and effectivity; and prevent police misuse and abuse of power. The multitude of police functions makes performance evaluation difficult and inconsistent. Beckley (2007: 939) noted the absence of specialised duty delegation in the UK police. Police officers are expected to be able to perform duties from the community patrolling to crime investigation. While this is advantageous in the overall growth of police officers, it prevents the development of specialised and quality skills that can only be learnt from constant exposure to a specific task. The multiple functions required of the police force prevent them from specializing and optimizing their potential in a given function. They are spread too thin to be efficient and effective. Technological advancements on the other hand have undoubtedly promoted the efficiency and responsiveness of the police force. They are able to provide timely response to citizen calls. However, too much reliance on technology discourages the police to depend on their own resources and hone their skills. By using vehicles instead of foot patrolling, the police loses the opportunity to mingle and connect with the people. Some police officers obtain information from the internet and database records instead of going to the field. Investigation and prosecution proceedings are relying more and more on forensic science to provide evidence. This reduces if not eliminates the need for people participation in the process. Employment of technology reduces interaction and prevents the creation of a better and more cooperative relationship between police and the people. As a result, the gap between police and community expands. People are not comfortable dealing with the police and may hesitate to call for assistance or help them in their investigations. Hillyard and Tomlinson (2000: 400) believe that police officers have political, legal and financial accountabilities. However, closer inspection of the police force reveals that police officers are only accountable to their professional mandates and not to anyone else (Moore, 1992: 116). Despite the introduction of the value for money service in law enforcement under the Thatcher government (Long, 2004), the police force still have the discretion to decide which public concerns are important and which are not part of the police work. They can refuse assistance if they deem the work to be irrelevant to police functions. This promotes public distrust to the police. Although there is increasing recognition of the need to enforce police accountability, the question about how and to whom they should be made accountable remains. The authority and autonomy given to the police force on the other hand creates dangers on the way police works. While the idea of a law enforcement emancipated from the government is alluring, the unrestrained power it afforded the police can be daunting. The police functions as an objective agency that protects the people from criminals and from the government abuses; however, there are beliefs that the people are also susceptible to dangers from the police force itself. Organisations like the UNDP recognize the authority of the police force and how this could result to abuse and misuse of power. There is a need to draw the line between accountability and authority; between policing and coercion; and between public safety and citizen liberty. Furthermore, Moore (1992: 117) also argued that the lack of governmental regulation and public control in policing also results to their stagnation. They remain oblivious of the government and citizens views, thus they are limited by their own perceptions and mandates and fail to make appropriate improvements in their services. The UK police force is now perceived as an industry rather than an agency. They have become productivity-oriented (high clearance rate, high arrest rate and high productivity) rather than community-oriented. As mentioned earlier, the lack of centralised police agency in the UK gives the police force more authority and responsibility. Their involvement is not only limited to the community but to the entire nation. They have more authority than their counterparts from other countries. They have too much power and too little regulation, thus, the risk of police domination. Reactive policing requires the police to take action after a crime is committed. This ensures that the police are not unlawfully intruding into the lives of the citizens. However, this promotes retrospective instead of preventive action. It relies on victims and witnesses in order to enforce the suitable police action. Also, reactive policing does not ensure the apprehension of the offenders. Thus, this strategy does not help reduce crime. Another issue is the deterioration of relationship between police and the public. Negative issues like police discrimination, aggression, abuse and corruption had resulted to the publics mistrust of law enforcers. This prevents the public from cooperating with police officers in community patrols and crime investigations. They do not believe that helping the police will lead to safer and more secure community. The flow of information to the police is not as strong as it used to be. According to Moore (1992:117), some people choose to stay quiet than cooperate with the police to avoid retaliation from the violators. This implies not only the peoples lack of trust on the integrity of the police force but also on their capability to protect them. Conclusion The law enforcement style of policing in the UK and Wales is both favourable and detrimental to the performance and effectivity of policing and the publics perception of the police force. It promotes professionalism of the police force. The various features of policing in England and Wales reflect the governments attempt to improve the police force and meet the changing needs of the public. The integration of various strategies such as reactive policing addresses the concern of involvement and interference. Technological advancements are incorporated for more efficient, effective, responsive, and up-to-date system. However, the multitude of functions makes performance evaluation problematic. Despite these imperfections, law enforcement style of policing in the UK and Wales is effective as it provides a common backdrop to the various police agencies in the said places. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-44394670572406352402020-01-20T07:47:00.001-08:002020-01-20T07:47:01.921-08:00The Pressure To Be Perfect Essay -- essays research papers The Pressure to be Perfect In today's competitive society, a person strives for perfection, due to the fact that so much emphasis is placed on one's outer appearance. No matter who we are or where we live, society puts this pressure upon us. We are typically faced with this pressure by models on television and in magazines. Companies seem to have targeted women more so than men. They usually use women with good looks and nice figures to advertise and market their product. When companies use these women in advertisements, it is setting a standard that other women feel that they need to follow. What has happened to internal beauty? Society puts so much importance on external beauty that people have forgotten about an individual having beauty within. The sayings ââ¬Å"beauty is in the eye of the beholderâ⬠and ââ¬Å"beauty is only skin deepâ⬠come to mind when I think about just how much emphasis is placed on outer appearance. A major factor that has increased the percentage of overweight people in society is technology. This includes items such as elevators, escalators, garage-door openers, drive-in windows, and the remote control. It use to be that you would at least burn some calories by having to get up and turn the channel on the television, but thanks to technology it is now a push of a button. Just think, things have the possibility to grow increasingly worse because of the 'information super highway'. There is no need to get out and walk the malls in search of a particular item... berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-85268659387922123002020-01-12T04:10:00.001-08:002020-01-12T04:10:04.550-08:00LEDC and MEDC Economic and Social IssuesThe population in the UK is forever ageing, with people living until a much older age today. One economic effect of this is that pensioners will, in time, outnumber children. This will mean that there will be a generation between certain ages that has a very low population and once this age band becomes part of the working population, there will be significantly less tax revenues for the government. This will indirectly affect the economy. In addition, there may be a large deficit, where the about being paid into the economy is less than the amount being paid out. Because pensioners require healthcare, disability benefits and state pensions, there may be a lot of money going out to the high number of pensioners and because there are much more older dependant people the working population cannot produce enough make sure there is stability. This could also mean there is a great burden on the health service. When people are older, they require much more healthcare, and so the health services in the UK will have more pressure as there are so many older people. There are also many social costs. One is that with more people becoming older, the death rate will be high, but the birth rate remains low as there are so many older people and very few people are young enough to give birth. This will mean the population could decrease. Additionally, when there are more elderly people, the healthcare system cannot cope, there will be a sudden need for more old people's homes and this will put pressure on the NHS. However, there are some positive economic impacts. There will be a growing market for products such as stair lifts and wheel chairs. Also, companies like hotels will have a wider spread of profits throughout the year because pensioners. There may also be an increase in private healthcare profits because many elderly people who are rich can afford to have private healthcare. There is also an increased life expectancy and lower death rates in the country as more people are living and for a long time. Caatinga in north Brazil is a rural area that is home to mostly poor people. The people living in Caatinga are moving to much more industrialized cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to the south of Brazil. The main reasons people are leaving the rural areas are the lack of employment opportunities, the main source of income in Caatinga is farming jobs and other agricultural jobs. This is then made worse by the frequent droughts in the area and other natural disasters. Another reason people are moving is because of large families that have very little land to share amongst the sons. This is caused by a high birth rate in rural areas like Caatinga. Overgrazing of the land will lead to bad crops being produced and soil that is useless. This then leads to starvation, resulting from either too little output for the people of the area or crop failure. This has then lead to more families selling land off and moving away. The land that they sell off may be to richer farmers that have tractors and other mechanized equipment. This then causes a reduction in the number of jobs available in the area. Farming is also hard work with long hours and little pay. In LEDC's lack of money will mean a lack of farming equipment. Caatinga also experiences many droughts and so the hard physical condition of the area will cause a loss of jobs or food in the area. Caatinga also has a lack of services like schools and hospitals; this will be hard for families to cope with because of young children. Finally, the government are more likely to invest in urban areas rather than rural areas like Caatinga. The reasons that people move to the city and urban areas are because, they seek better jobs that pay much more money, jobs in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are much better paid than in Caatinga. They are housed better and have a better quality of life, they have a better medical treatment and more services like schools and they have enough food. The UK, which is in Western Europe, is an MEDC. The average life expectancy in the UK is 77 years. Burkina Faso is in Central Africa and is an LEDC. The life expectancy there is 48 years. Firstly the infant mortality rate in Burkina Faso is 170 per 1000. This means out of every 1000 babies born, 170 of them are likely to die. This proves that there is a problem in Burkina Faso because in the UK the Infant mortality rate is only 6 per 1000. This clearly shows how the healthcare in Burkina Faso is poor and so they are more likely to die younger. Another factor is the Average calorie intake per day. In Burkina faso it is 2387 calories, whereas in the UK it is 3317 calories. Burkina Faso's figure is lower than what is needed to live. This shows how more people are starving and dieing younger. Similarly, the amount of the population that is malnourished in Burkina Faso is 30%, whereas in the UK it is 2%. This illustrates a growing problem of food in Burkina Faso. The lack of available food will mean more people are dieing and many more young people are struggling to survive. The number of years for the UK's population to double is 433 years, in contrast to Burkina Faso who's population is said to double in 23 years! This will cause large problems with resources and may start off a large phase of famine and disease. This will keep the Life expectancy low. The access to healthcare in Burkina Faso is less than 50% this clearly indicates a problem in health with many people and the majority of the population not being able to have healthcare. This will keep the life expectancy low, compared to the UK which has 100% access to healthcare for everyone. With an average income of only $230 per person, Burkina faso is likely to have problems of poverty and lack of food and clean water. This means most families are likely to die young because no money will eventually be the cause of deaths, against the UK, with an average income of i18,000. These factors clearly show that Burkina faso has a very low life expectancy, many people are dieing as a result of these poor living standards. Whereas the UK has a high life expectancy because the overall quality of life is better. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-28999224663367954892020-01-04T00:34:00.001-08:002020-01-04T00:34:03.808-08:00Jeffrey Somers - ThoughtCo berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-5367655772100794112019-12-26T20:59:00.001-08:002019-12-26T20:59:02.712-08:00Are You A Fan Of The Supernatural Do You Believe In Things Are you a fan of the supernatural? Do you believe in things such as ghosts, vampires, werewolves, or zombies? Perhaps you simply like to watch those types of things. Whatever your standpoint is, supernatural beings are more popular than ever. Vampires, in particular, have fascinated audiences of all ages for decades. While the term ââ¬Å"vampireâ⬠is more recent, people have been telling stories of blood-sucking demons since ancient times. Many of these stories tell of people who used to consume blood for magical reasons. ââ¬Å"It was used as a part of witchcraft, as a symbolic connection of the powers of life and death, as a religious practice, or as a form of offering to the godsâ⬠(Klimczak). Early films such as Nosferatu portrayed vampires asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Vlad III would become an inspiration for the original Dracula. Bram Stoker wrote the novel Dracula in 1897, and it became the prototype, not only for Dracula, but for all vampires to follow. Stoker described Count Dracula as having a bushy mustache, a large nose, and hair that protruded in all directions. This Dracula seemed to resemble todayââ¬â¢s werewolves rather than todayââ¬â¢s vampires, seeing as he also had pointy ears and hair in the palms of his hands. Although no actual written proof exists, it is theorized that Bram Stokerââ¬â¢s Dracula was modeled after Walt Whitman, who was a personal hero of Stokerââ¬â¢s (Nuzum). While vampires today look vastly different, Stokerââ¬â¢s Dracula is still considered a classic and a huge influence on the popularity of vampires. In the novel, Dracula ventured to England from his home in Transylvania so that he could find new victims and bring more people into the world of the undead. He had superhuman strength, didnââ¬â¢t see his reflection in the mirror, and used his charm to unleash his reign of terror. His strength and other supernatural qualities, like being able to defy gravity or use telepathic skills, are believed to have started by his interactions with the devil. Bram Stoker created a new genre, which is something that is very difficult to do. He created a new archetype and a whole new supernatural being for people to fear. This type of cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women. On average about 26% of women developed breast cancer in 2015 [2]. There are multiple signs and symptoms that can help one become aware if they have the disease. The most prominent key feature is the presence of a lump in your breast or armpit. Such signs may be indicative of breast cancer. In addition changes in the breast and the skin around it are also good indicators. So if the skin around your breast as well as the surrounding nipple becomes puckered or dimpled, it is recommended to go and consult a physician. The inverting or crusting of the nipple may also present as symptoms. However, these are all early onset signs. If the cancer has been in your body for a longer period of time, one might experience things such as bone pain, nausea, weight loss, shortness of b reath etc. This is usually an indicative point that the cancer has spread to different parts of the body. If the cancer continues to persist in the body without treatment, it can result in various detrimental effects. The symptoms one may already have are likely to worsen with the addition of new symptoms. Though every cancer differs in its effects and symptoms, the ideology behind it remains the same in that the body is unable to control cell division. If so, then you need to know about Brown Universityââ¬â¢s PLME. What is Brownââ¬â¢s PLME? Brownââ¬â¢s Program in Liberal Medical Education, more commonly known as PLME, combines the undergraduate education and professional medical studies in a single 8-year program. Judging by the number of years, you should note that PLME is not an accelerated program. The purpose of the program is to give students the opportunity to gain admission to medical school without sacrificing the benefits of first receiving a liberal arts education. Benefits of Brownââ¬â¢s PLME 1. Open Curriculum Brown University is most well-known for its undergraduate open curriculum. There are no core requirements for enrolled students, so they have the freedom to choose what they wish to study. The only specific requirement for Brown students is to successfully finish at least 30 courses in 8 semesters, to complete at least one concentration program (a.k.a. major), and to demonstrate excellent written English skills by graduation. Under Brownââ¬â¢s undergraduate open curriculum, students have the flexibility and options of studying anything from the Art History to Biology. While this is so also true for other pre-medical programs, there is less pressure for students to major in a hard science since theyââ¬â¢ve already been accepted to the Warren Alpert Medical School. 2. No MCAT Good news! Once you get accepted to PLME, youââ¬â¢re accepted to both the undergraduate program at Brown University and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This means thereââ¬â¢s no need for you to study for the dreaded MCAT. 3. Single Application Since youââ¬â¢ve already been accepted to the Warren Alpert Medical School, you do not have to submit another medical school application! Typically, pre-med students would have to complete their medical school applications during senior year of college. Application Requirements for PLME1. Recommended Courses in HS There arenââ¬â¢t high school prerequisites for students, but PLME are encouraged to take up honors and AP classes that are offered at their high school. Here are a few of the recommendations:4 years of English, with significant emphasis on writing 3 years of college preparatory mathematics 3 years of foreign language 2 years of laboratory science above the freshman level 2 years of history, including American history 2. Standardized Testing Requirements Brown Universityââ¬â¢s PLME allows students to take either the ACT or the SAT. If you choose to take the ACT, the ACT Writing portion is required. The program also requires 2 SAT subject tests. PLME applicants are encouraged to take one of them in a science. Please note if you get a score over 750 for the Physics SAT Subject Test, you fulfill the PLME Physics Competency. Take it under consideration, as it may help you in the future! 3. Supplemental Essays The application to Brownââ¬â¢s PLME is available on the Common Application. On top of the general Brown University application, students are also required to answer two additional supplemental essay prompts: PLME Supplement Essay Prompt 1: Most high school seniors are unsure about eventual career choices. What experiences have led you to consider medicine as your future profession? Please describe specifically why you have chosen to apply to the Program in Liberal Medical Education in pursuit of your career in medicine. Also, be sure to indicate your rationale on how the PLME is a ââ¬Å"good fitâ⬠for your personal, academic, and future professional goals. (Please limit your response to this question to 500 words.) PLME Supplement Essay Prompt 2: Since the Program in Liberal Medical Education espouses a broad-based liberal education, please describe your fields of interest in both the sciences and the liberal arts. Be specific about what courses and aspects of the program will be woven into a potential educational plan. (Please limit your response to this question to 500 words.) PLME Successful Essay Examples EJW2154 Brown University ââ¬Ë20 A few months ago, I came across a video called the ââ¬Å"Brown Difference.â⬠If I hadnââ¬â¢t seen that video, I would never have believed that another person had pursued the same esoteric double concentration that attracted me. Jennifer Tsai, class of 2014, spoke of not only her studies in Human and Health Biology and Ethnic Studies, but also of Brownââ¬â¢s PLME program that supported her to thrive in these two seemingly disparate fields. Her words echo not only the path I want to take, but also the community to thrive in. As a Latin scholar at a high school for science and technology, I have always made sacrifices to pursue the classics, and have been planning to do the same throughout college. However, because the PLME encourages and allows for a premedical student to fully indulge in a liberal arts education, this program would be a perfect fit for me. I would plan to take the necessary premedical courses as well as the related science courses that interest me, specifically to prepare me for a career in anesthesiology. These include Organic Chemistry, Biotechnology in Medicine, Tissue Engineering, and Synthetic Biological Systems. Continue reading. What You Need to Know about PLME 1. Applicants and Acceptance Rates This BS/MD program is highly selective, since it accepts students to both the undergraduate and graduate program at Brown. The school usually only accepts approximately 100 PLME students every graduating class. To put this into perspective, PLMEââ¬â¢s acceptance rate was 3.67% in 2015, while Brownââ¬â¢s overall acceptance rate in 2015 was 9.5%. 2. Early Regular Decision PLME applicants can submit their application during both the Early Decision round and the Regular Decision round. Because youââ¬â¢re applying to both the university and the medical school, there are a few things you should know. 3. Transfer Opportunity If youââ¬â¢re accepted to Brownââ¬â¢s PLME, youââ¬â¢re accepted to the college and the medical school. Thatââ¬â¢s pretty straightforward. PLME applicants can be accepted early decision to the College only and not the PLME. Early PLME applicants are bounded by the early decision agreement and are obligated to enroll regardless of the outcome of the PLME application. Students rejected from the PLME early decision will be reconsidered for regular decision. Applicants not admitted to the PLME will still be considered for admission to the College for their undergraduate degree. The PLME is only offered to prospective freshmen students. It is not available for students who are transferring from other universities. No internal transfers are available to Brown students as well. 4. Withdrawal or Other Medical Schools Once youââ¬â¢re accepted to the PLME, you will have to complete the requirements of all PLME students. There are specific PLME courses students have to take and are more rigorous than the general pre-medical studies. PLME students also have a grade level they must maintain throughout their 4 undergraduate years at Brown. PLME students are free to apply out of PLME, which means they are free to apply to other medical schools. In order to do so, they must notify the university by September 15th of their senior year. If you choose to apply out, you will forfeit your reserved spot at the Warren Alpet Medical School. Energy must be absorbed in order for an electron to be excited from an orbital near the nucleus (n 1) to get to an orbital further from the nucleus (n 2). The principal quantum number is cited first in the set of four quantum numbers associated with an electron. The principal quantum numberà has the greatest effect on the energy of the electron. It was first designed to distinguish between different energy levels in the Bohr model of the atomà but remains applicable to the modern atomic orbital theory. Source Andrew, A. V. (2006). 2. When it is produced from petroleum-based feedstocks, its commonly called butanol. Biobutanol is in the same family as other commonly known alcohols, namely single-carbon methanol, and the more-well-known two-carbon alcohol ethanol. The importance of the number of carbon atoms in any given molecule of alcohol is directly related to the energy content of that particular molecule. The more carbon atoms present, especially in a long carbon-to-carbon bond chains, the denser in energy the alcohol is. Breakthroughs in biobutanol processing methods, namely the discovery and development of genetically modified microorganisms, has set the stage for biobutanol to surpass ethanol as a renewable fuel. Once considered usable only as an industrial solvent and chemical feedstock, biobutanol shows great promise as a motor fuel due to its favorable energy density, and it returns better fuel economy and is considered a superior motor fuel (when compared to ethanol). Biobutanol Production Biobutanol is derived mainly from the fermentation of the sugars in organic feedstocks (biomass). Historically, up until about the mid-50s, biobutanol was fermented from simple sugars in a process that produced acetone and ethanol, in addition to the butanol component. The process is known as ABE (Acetone Butanol Ethanol) and has used unsophisticated (and not particularly hearty) microbes such as Clostridium acetobutylicum. The problem with this type of microbe is that it is poisoned by the very butanol it produces once the alcohol concentration rises above approximately 2 percent. This processing problem caused by the inherent weakness of generic-grade microbes, plus inexpensive and abundant (at the time) petroleum gave way to the simpler and cheaper distillation-from-petroleum method of refining butanol. My, how times change. In recent years, with petroleum prices heading steadily upwards, and worldwide supplies getting tighter and tighter, scientists have revisited the fermentation of sugars for the manufacturing of biobutanol. Great strides have been made by researchers in creating ââ¬Å"designer microbesâ⬠that can tolerate higher concentrations of butanol without being killed off. The ability to withstand harsh high concentration alcohol environments, plus the superior metabolism of these genetically enhanced bacteria has fortified them with the endurance necessary to degrade the tough cellulosic fibers of biomass feedstocks such as pulpy woods and switchgrass. The door has been kicked open and the reality of cost competitive, if not cheaper, renewable alcohol motor fuel is upon us. Advantages So, all of this fancy chemistry and intense research notwithstanding, biobutanol has many advantages over here-to-fore easier-to-produce ethanol. Biobutanol has a higher energy content than ethanol, so there is a much lower loss of fuel economy. With an energy content of about 105,000 BTUs/gallon (versus ethanolââ¬â¢s approximate 84,000 BTUs/gallon), biobutanol is much closer to the energy content of gasoline (114,000 BTUs/gallon).Biobutanol can be easily blended with conventional gasoline at higher concentrations than ethanol for use in unmodified engines. Experiments have shown that biobutanol can run in an unmodified conventional engine at 100 percent, but to date, no manufacturers will warrant use of blends higher than 15 percent.Because it is less susceptible to separation in the presence of water (than ethanol), it can be distributed via conventional infrastructure (pipelines, blending facilities and storage tanks). Thereââ¬â¢s no need for a separate distribution network. It is less corrosive than ethanol. Not only is biobutanol a higher-grade more energy dense fuel, but it is also less explosive than ethanol.EPA te st results show that biobutanol reduces emissions, namely hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Exact values depend upon the engine state of tune. But thatââ¬â¢s not all. Biobutanol as a motor fuel- with its long chain structure and preponderance of hydrogen atoms- could be used as a stepping-stone in bringing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the mainstream. One of the biggest challenges facing hydrogen fuel cell vehicle development is the storage of onboard hydrogen for sustainable range and the lack of hydrogen infrastructure for fueling. The high hydrogen content of butanol would make it an ideal fuel for onboard reforming. Instead of burning the butanol, a reformer would extract the hydrogen to power the fuel cell. Disadvantages It is not common for one fuel type to have so many obvious advantages without at least one glowing disadvantage; however, with biobutanol versus ethanol argument, that doesnââ¬â¢t appear to be the case. Currently, the only real disadvantage is there are many more ethanol refining facilities than biobutanol refineries. And while ethanol refining facilities far outnumber those for biobutanol, the possibility of retrofitting ethanol plants to biobutanol is feasible. And as refinements continue with genetically modified microorganisms, the feasibility of converting plants becomes greater and greater. Itââ¬â¢s clear that biobutanol is the superior choice over ethanol as a gasoline additive and perhaps eventual gasoline replacement. For the past 30 years or so ethanol has had most of the technological and political support and has seeded the market for renewable alcohol motor fuel. Biobutanol is now poised to pick up the mantle. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-26126161585980563762019-11-21T05:25:00.001-08:002019-11-21T05:25:03.950-08:00Topic Selection 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsTopic Selection 3 - Essay Example s to recover from bankruptcy, legislation and business debt restructuring require that the underlying problems be assessed in order to ensure that the risk of another bankruptcy period does not occur. Debt advice is also required together with financial teaching about how to use money in accordance to how it is received. Help is needed in order to find other sources of income that will ensure smooth running of a business without the necessary need to borrow money. Debt settlement plans should be drafted so as to reduce the debt accrued over a certain period. Partial payment should be made in order to start build up of a company again (Wood, 2007).à Psychology in business is what leads the business back to recovery, both in the market sector and the global sector. Using psychology, the cash flow burden to the company if minimal as it is done in a correct manner. When sales decrease, then the market value of a company decreases and recovery from such may take time. It dictates that a company should be more careful with the services and products that it is offering to the public otherwise there will be a shortage of customers. With the correct input of sales, the cash flow into the company will turn out to be more that the cash flowing out. This will enable the company to make profits and boost the economy (Wood, berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-12677150698811555642019-11-20T03:18:00.001-08:002019-11-20T03:18:03.603-08:00Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 29Case Study - Essay Example This is also vital in increasing the customer numbers of the business which has increased the profitability. (Anonymous, 2010) Andy Garafallos success in the restaurant business does not come in solidarity but with the help of her three managers; Kelly, Daniella and Patrick. The managerââ¬â¢s attributes have been instrumental in the growth of the business. Kelly who is the kitchen manager exhibits good leadership skills. This can be observed in her ordering ability. This implies that she has taken control in the kitchen for work to flow effectively. She is also efficient in her work. This is important for a manager for it avoids wastes during the production process and this ensures that the profits are maximized. Kelly also is honest which a key characteristic of a good manager is. This enables that finances are held accountable without embezzlement and that she remains loyal to the job. Kelly has such difficulty getting along with the salespeople, delivery people, and wait staff. She need to improve her collaboration skills to enable her go along well with the salespeople. Danniella has strong communication skills. This ability enables him to convince and also understand the customersââ¬â¢ needs. This is vital for the growth and sustainability of the business. This consideration of putting the customers first is key to make them loyal to the business. She is also collaborative and this enable her to be very hospitable and welcoming to the customers which ensures that the customers comes again. However,Danniella needs to improve in her critical thinking and not become lousy in numbers. Her relationship with customers should go a long way to increase them. Patrick is ethical and has communication skills to make the customers to come. This is important in the business since customers tend to understand the products that are offered by the business. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-5880485146339618602019-11-17T15:49:00.001-08:002019-11-17T15:49:06.346-08:00In recent years Essay Example for Free In recent years Essay In recent years, the selective and mobility promoting function of education has become more important than its socialising function` Do you agree? Explain I agree with the opinion that in recent years, the selective and mobility promoting function of education has become more important than its socialising function. While both these functions retain their importance, the selective and mobility one has received greater prominence. In the US, education has always been a gateway to professional life and a vehicle for social mobility. In a sense, this is a great advantage of the US society compared to those with traditionally rigid social structures since promotion to upper classes through education opens the way for those from low-income families to move up in their socioeconomic status relatively quickly. With years, however, educational institutions became a tool for sorting school graduates into those who qualify for professional careers and those who do not. Reliance on standardised tests has turned the US system of education into an institution that selects those fitting into the standards and gives them chances for social mobility. At the same time, the socializing function has become less important. Modern adolescents still seek to make new friends, to have cheerful college years. Their professors remind them that socializing is also important for social mobility, prompting them to build a network of acquaintances that will later contribute to their career. Thus, even socializing has been turned into a vehicle for social mobility. Students increasingly view their educational experience as a step toward career progress rather than a chance to gain friends or broaden their world outlook. This is visible, for instance, in graduate studentsââ¬â¢ aspirations to get into top MBA programs that many see as a gateway to high-salaried executive world. The main advantage of the top programs as compared to the rest, in the eyes of a large part of student body, is that they have sifted through applicants at the beginning, chosen the best ones and sent them off to high posts in business organisations. Socializing takes a second place in these considerations because students are mostly interested in career ambitions and see education as a way to realize them. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5341750435322089521.post-82016991724048410082019-11-15T04:21:00.001-08:002019-11-15T04:21:05.461-08:00Why is this night different from all other nights? :: Personal Narrative WritingWhy is this night different from all other nights? My sister Sarah is lighting the candles, and her hands tremble when she turns to cover her face ina gesture of piety. I am thirteen years old, and we are gathered at my house for the Passover seder ("order" in Hebrew) and my whole family is here: mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and two cousins. Did I say my whole family is here? That is not entirely correct: my father is absent. My parents split five years ago, and he doesn't celebrate holidays with us anymore. We don't really talk about this, though, and instead my mother's boyfriend, a Gentile from Colorado, takes my father's place at the head of the table, and leads the seder, reading the phonetic Hebrew I secretly scribbled in the margins of that Haggadah ("telling" in Hebrew) several years ago, when Sarah could read Hebrew and I couldn't yet. I can now. While Sarah's hands are trembling over her closed eyes, Nettie's hands tremble as well, as she carries out the heavy silver tray containing the seder plate, wine, matzot, and bowls of salt water. This tray belonged to my grandmother, and, as I'm told each time we use it, it's an antique, worth a lot of money. Earlier this afternoon, I saw Nettie polishing it in the kitchen, along with the matching silver serving pieces, silver salt and pepper shakers, silver pitchers, and of course, the ornate silver wineglass we put out for Elijah. This is an impressive collection of silver, all monogrammed with my grandmother's initials, and when Nettie was polishing the pieces this afternoon, she spread them out neatly on our kitchen counters. They took up the whole room. Nettie is our maid. She's been with us since I was three and Sarah seven. She comes to our house three days each week, all day, and sometimes she watches us when my mother goes out at night and on the weekends. She is a black woman, somewhere around sixty years old, and while she has been with us for years, I cannot seem to remember her aging visibly. Her skin isdark and smooth, and smells faintly of the rosewater and glycerin lotion she applies daily. Her hair, I'm told, is very long, although I've never seen it in any style other than wrapped in a tight bun on the top of her head. berthamitchell1934http://www.blogger.com/profile/08708854885780698286noreply@blogger.com0
